hongya cave

Hongya Cave

Hongya Cave is an 18-story commercial complex built into the cliffs above the Jialing River, with stacked balconies and lantern-lit walkways descending toward the water. Its design draws on the stilted wooden buildings, though what visitors see today is a modern reconstruction. The exterior is the real draw, particularly around dusk, when the whole cliffside structure looks its most atmospheric. Inside, Hongya Cave is mostly restaurants and shops, suitable for a casual wander.

ciqikou ancient town

Ciqikou Ancient Town

Ciqikou sits beside the Jialing River, about 10 kilometers from central Chongqing, and was once a river trading post known for porcelain. Today, it is a compact old-town area with stone lanes, teahouses, snack stalls, and low timber buildings. The main street can get crowded on weekends, but the side alleys are quieter and feel closer to Ciqikou’s old river-town character. Two to three hours is usually enough for a visit, especially if you stop at one of the teahouses near the river before heading back.

dazu rock carvings

Dazu Rock Carvings

The Dazu Rock Carvings are a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 90 kilometers west of central Chongqing, so they work best as a day trip. Carved into sandstone cliffs between the 9th and 13th centuries, the site contains more than 50,000 figures across several areas. Baodingshan is the highlight for most visitors, with a long curved cliff face densely carved with Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian figures. The scale, detail, and remaining color make Dazu the most iconic cultural site around Chongqing.

jiefangbei pedestrian square

Jiefangbei Pedestrian Square

Jiefangbei is the commercial center of old Chongqing, built around the Liberation Monument in the middle of a busy pedestrian district. For many visitors, it works like Chongqing’s version of Times Square: not a place for quiet sightseeing, but a convenient downtown area with shopping malls, restaurants, cafés, and food streets all within a short walk. Its central location also makes it easy to continue on to nearby sights such as Hongya Cave, Chaotianmen, and the riverside areas.

Hidden Gems In Chongqing

Liziba Monorail Station

Liziba Monorail Station

It is where Chongqing's reputation as an engineering oddity earns its keep: a Line 2 monorail runs directly through the middle of a 19-story residential building. Floors six through eight serve as the station, with apartments above and shops below, all designed and built as a single structure. Viewing from the platform across the road, trains appear from one side of the building and disappear through the other. The admission is free and the station is easy to reach from downtown.

Huangjueping Graffiti Street

Huangjueping Graffiti Street

Huangjueping rarely makes it onto standard Chongqing itineraries, which is part of its appeal. It runs through a working residential neighborhood in Jiulongpo District, near the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. Apartment blocks, walls, and side lanes are covered in murals and graffiti, though some sections have faded over time. The area feels more like a lived-in student art neighborhood than a purpose-built tourist attraction.

Eling No. 2 Factory Creative Park

Eling No. 2 Factory Creative Park

Formerly a printing factory, Eling No. 2 Factory Creative Park sits on the hillside above Liziba — close enough to pair naturally with a visit to the station. The original factory buildings are largely intact, and the exposed brick, narrow staircases, and open terraces give the place a genuine industrial feel. The terraces offer a decent view over Chongqing's stacked hillsides, making it a good place to slow down after Liziba.
