At 600 meters, Canton Tower is the tallest structure in Guangzhou and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Its tapered, twisted steel frame stands out from the city’s more conventional towers.From the upper observation decks, visitors can look out over the Pearl River and the skyline of Zhujiang New Town across the water. Access to the decks is ticketed, and the views are especially striking in the evening, when the riverfront lights begin to come on.

Shamian Island sits just west of central Guangzhou, separated from the surrounding neighborhoods by narrow canals. The area was once divided into British and French concessions, and many of its 19th-century buildings still feature stone colonnades, arched windows, and wide verandas. Shaded by large banyan trees, its low-rise blocks and open squares feel quieter and more contained than the dense commercial districts nearby. 

Just a short metro ride from the city center, Baiyun Mountain is a large park of forested ridges along Guangzhou’s northern edge. At 382 meters, the summit is modest, but the upper platforms provide a clear perspective on how the city’s high-rises stretch toward the horizon. A cable car handles most of the ascent, with paved paths winding past tea houses and small reservoirs. Popular with local retirees and families, the mountain feels more like a vast public park than a remote wilderness, offering a rare break from the city's density.

Built in the late 19th century, the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is the largest and best-preserved traditional compound in Guangzhou. The layout is a series of interconnected courtyards featuring gray brick walls and carved wooden screens. Amid modern Guangzhou, the halls form a rare, self-contained enclave of historical craftsmanship.For most visitors, the main draw is the decorative richness of the complex, where stone carving, ironwork, brickwork, and elaborate woodwork appear at almost every turn.
