Visit Haigeng Dam in Winter for the Seagulls

The photos most people associate with Dianchi Lake — thousands of black-headed gulls filling the sky along Haigeng Dam — only happen during the birds' annual migration from Siberia. The gulls arrive in November and leave in March each year. From April to October, the lakefront is still fine for a walk, but it can feel underwhelming if the visit was planned around those winter bird photos.

If you visit between April and October, do not make Haigeng Dam the main stop; use that time for Western Hills or Green Lake Park instead.

Kunming’s rainy season runs roughly from May to October, with frequent overcast days and occasional afternoon showers. Pack a light rain jacket if visiting in summer. Even then, Kunming usually feels more manageable than coastal cities because the humidity is lower.

At this level, you can stay in a comfortable central hotel, eat proper sit-down Yunnan meals, and use taxis when the route is awkward by metro.
